On Sunday, January 14, former Union minister Milind Deora formally submitted his resignation from the Congress party. He announced his intention to sever his family’s 55-year connection to the party in a statement.
There has been a lot of conjecture in the political community lately regarding Deora perhaps joining the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Milind Deora on joining another political party
Deora had earlier on Saturday denied the rumors that he was leaving and going to join the Shiv Sena, which is run by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
After publicly expressing his displeasure with the Shiv Sena (UBT) for publicly claiming the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, Milind Deora told reporters that he is currently having talks with his followers.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction has declared its intention to run in the forthcoming general elections for the Mumbai South seat, which Deora had held before 2014. The leader of Congress has not been pleased with this approach.
Deora said his party would declare candidates for different seats if such claims from an “alliance partner” continued in a video statement that was made public on Sunday.
It is noteworthy that in the Maha Vikas Aghadi, the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) have the Shiv Sena (UBT) as an alliance partner. Deora stressed that no one should make any hasty accusations or counterclaims until after the formal discussions over seat allocation are over.
Deora, a veteran of the Congress Party, is his father’s son. He won the Mumbai South seat in 2004 and 2009. But in the elections that followed in 2014 and 2019, he came in first against Arvind Sawant, the leader of the Shiv Sena (Undivided).
From 2012 to 2014, he was the Congressman’s Union Minister of State for Shipping, Communications, and Information Technology.
The Congress Party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of arranging the date of senior politician Milind Deora’s resignation, which is taking place shortly before the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Congress national secretary Jairam Ramesh told PTI that Deora had contacted him directly on Friday, saying he wanted to talk to Rahul Gandhi about his worries.
Concerns centered on the Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, vying for the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, which had been held by Milind Deora and his father, Murli Deora, in the past.
