Ajit Doval has been reappointed as the National Security Advisor (NSA), effective June 10, as confirmed by the government on June 13. Doval’s reappointment signifies the continued trust and reliance placed on him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A former director of the Intelligence Bureau, Doval has served as NSA since 2014 and is regarded as one of the Prime Minister’s most trusted aides. His career, marked by significant achievements and contributions to national security, has earned him a prestigious position in the government.

Doval, a 1968-batch IPS officer from the Kerala cadre, was the first policeman to be awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. His extensive experience in intelligence and security has been instrumental in shaping India’s national security strategy. As the head of the national security establishment, Doval oversees all anti-terror and intelligence agencies, making him one of the most powerful officers in the country.

PK Mishra continues as Principal Secretary to the PM

Alongside Doval, PK Mishra has been reappointed as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, also effective from June 10. Mishra, a 1972-batch IAS officer from the Gujarat cadre, has held this position since 2019, following the retirement of his predecessor, Nripendra Misra. Before becoming Principal Secretary, Mishra served as the Additional Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, a role that allowed him to build a close working relationship with Modi.

Mishra holds a PhD in Economics/Development Studies from the University of Sussex, England, and has had a distinguished career in public service. His expertise in administration and policy-making has been critical in supporting the Prime Minister’s office. Mishra’s reappointment reflects his pivotal role in the administration and the Prime Minister’s confidence in his abilities.

Cabinet Ranks of Doval & Mishra

Both Ajit Doval and PK Mishra will continue to hold the rank of cabinet minister in the table of precedence during their tenure. This elevated status underscores their importance within the government and the significant responsibilities they carry. The decision to accord them cabinet rank reflects the high level of trust and reliance the Prime Minister places on their counsel and leadership.

In addition to these key reappointments, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Amit Khare and Tarun Kapoor as advisors to the Prime Minister’s Office. Their terms will last for two years, starting from June 10, and they will hold the rank and scale of Secretary to the Government of India. Khare and Kapoor’s reappointments further indicate the Prime Minister’s strategy of maintaining a stable and experienced team to navigate the complexities of governance and policy implementation.

Significance of Reappointments

These reappointments are significant as they highlight the Prime Minister’s confidence in his core team, especially Ajit Doval and PK Mishra, who have been integral to the administration’s functioning for many years. Doval’s reappointment ensures continuity in national security policy, a critical area given the current global and regional security dynamics. His vast experience and strategic acumen are invaluable as India navigates challenges such as terrorism, cybersecurity threats, and geopolitical tensions.

Similarly, PK Mishra’s continued role as Principal Secretary ensures that the administrative and policy-making processes remain efficient and effective. Mishra’s expertise in economics and development studies is particularly valuable as the government focuses on economic growth and development. His reappointment ensures that the Prime Minister’s office will continue to benefit from his insights and experience.

The decision to retain these key figures underscores the importance of stability and continuity in the administration. It also reflects the Prime Minister’s strategy of relying on trusted and experienced officials to achieve his policy objectives. As Doval and Mishra continue in their respective roles, their leadership and expertise will be crucial in shaping India’s domestic and foreign policies in the coming years.

The reappointments of Ajit Doval as National Security Advisor and PK Mishra as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, along with the retention of Amit Khare and Tarun Kapoor as advisors, signify a period of continuity and stability within the Indian government. These decisions highlight the trust and confidence the Prime Minister places in his team, ensuring that experienced and capable hands continue to guide India’s strategic and administrative affairs.
