“Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson has made history by winning an Emmy award for ‘Best Actress in a Comedy’. Brunson is now the first black woman to win an Emmy in this category in over 40 years. The accolade was first bagged by Isabel Sanford in 1981 for “The Jeffersons”.
Brunson stars as a second-grade teacher, Janine Teagues, on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”, which is centered around a group of teachers at a public school in Philadelphia. The actress is also a writer for and creator of the show. In her emotional and candid acceptance speech, the actress was heard saying “I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy. I say it every time, but I just love comedy so much that I am so happy to be able to get this.”
Brunson was also nominated for comedy guest actress and as an executive producer for the show. Last year the actress achieved an impressive feat becoming the first black woman ever to be nominated for a comedy series, writing and lead actress, all in the same year. She became the second black woman after Lena Waithe to win an Emmy in the writing category.
75th Emmys- Better Late Than Never
The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcasted on January 15, 2024 on Fox while the ceremony was held on January 6 & 7 at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The award ceremony faced four-month long delay owing to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in Hollywood which lasted for a period of six months.
“Succession” and “The Bear”, two of the most talked-about television series of 2023 took home the maximum number of awards, including ‘Outstand Drama Series’ and ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’, respectively.
