Lionel Messi dismissed speculation that his absence from a recent match in Hong Kong, which upset China, was politically motivated, attributing it instead to an injury.
Despite being adored by fans in China, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remained on the bench during Inter Miami’s 4-1 victory in a pre-season tour match against a Hong Kong select XI on February 4.
China behind Messi’s absence?
With nearly 40,000 fans in attendance, many of whom had paid over 1,000 Hong Kong dollars ($125) to watch the 36-year-old superstar play, the crowd expressed their frustration by chanting “Refund!” and signaling thumbs-down gestures while booing Messi and the team’s co-owner David Beckham after the match.
Some nationalist politicians interpreted Messi’s absence as a snub to China, especially after he played for 30 minutes in a friendly match a few days later in Japan. However, in a video shared on China’s Weibo social media platform on Monday, the World Cup-winning captain refuted these claims, stating that his absence was not for political reasons.
He emphasized his commitment to playing in every game and highlighted his positive relationship with China, mentioning his involvement in various activities in the country.
Messi clarified his absence
Following Messi’s explanation of his absence due to injury, fans on Weibo swiftly reacted, with some showing support for the football icon. One user expressed unwavering belief in Messi’s dedication to his fans, while another questioned the criticism directed at him for missing a friendly match.
However, not all responses were positive. Some users remained skeptical, suggesting Messi’s explanation fell short of an apology. Others criticized him, implying he prioritized other engagements over the match in Hong Kong.
Despite his past successful appearances in China, including a memorable match against Australia in Beijing, upcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Ivory Coast were canceled following Messi’s absence from the Hong Kong match.
