Renowned media entrepreneur and founder of the ETV Network and Ramoji Film City, Ramoji Rao, passed away in Hyderabad on June 8 while undergoing treatment. He was 87 years old and took his last breath at 3:45 am. Rao’s death marks the end of an era in Indian media and film, with his extensive contributions leaving a lasting legacy.

Tributes and Condolences from National Leaders

The announcement of Ramoji Rao’s demise was met with an outpouring of condolences from prominent leaders across India. Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over Rao’s passing, highlighting the transformative impact Rao had on Indian media. In a heartfelt tweet, Modi stated, “The passing away of Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world.”

The Telangana government has decided to honor Ramoji Rao by performing his last rites with state honors. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who was attending a CWC meeting in New Delhi, directed the State Chief Secretary to oversee the arrangements. The Chief Minister’s office confirmed that the Rangareddy Collector and the Cyberabad Commissioner would supervise the proceedings to ensure a dignified farewell.

Rao was rushed to hospital on June 5 after he suffered from high blood pressure and breathlessness.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also paid tribute to Rao, emphasizing the significant legacy he leaves behind in the Telugu-speaking world. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “Shri Ramoji Rao garu is no more. He made remarkable contributions in the field of journalism. Founder of the popular Eenadu newspaper and Film City in Hyderabad, he leaves a legacy behind in Telugu-speaking world. Condolences.”

BJP leader G Kishan Reddy acknowledged Rao’s monumental contributions to Telugu media and journalism, describing them as “commendable.” Reddy shared his condolences on X, stating, “Saddened by the passing of Shri Ramoji Rao garu. His remarkable contributions to Telugu media and journalism are commendable. My deepest condolences to his family members.”
