In a decisive match of WPL at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday 3rd March, the Delhi Capitals inflicted further agony upon the struggling Gujarat Giants, who find themselves at the bottom of WPL. Led by the formidable Meg Lanning, the Delhi Capitals secured a commanding 25-run victory, propelling themselves to the summit of the points table.
Throughout the match, the Delhi Capitals displayed their dominance, making it increasingly challenging for the winless Gujarat Giants to mount any significant challenge. Despite their best efforts, Gujarat Giants succumbed to their fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament, leaving them without a single point on the board.
The performance of Meg Lanning was particularly noteworthy, as she top-scored with a brilliant 41-ball 55, playing a pivotal role in setting a challenging total for the Gujarat Giants to chase. With this victory, the Delhi Capitals not only consolidated their position at the top of the table but also showcased their prowess as a formidable force in the Women’s Premier League {WPL}. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Giants are left grappling with their winless streak, desperately seeking to turn their fortunes around in the remainder of the tournament.
Delhi Capitals Clinch Victory in Thrilling WPL Encounter
In a thrilling encounter of WPL, Meg Lanning showcased her batting prowess for the Delhi Capitals (DC), opening the innings with a magnificent 41-ball 55, comprising six boundaries and a six. Her remarkable innings lifted the last edition’s runners-up to a competitive total of 163/8. Despite the impressive bowling performance from Gujarat pacer Meghna Singh, who claimed three of the first four wickets, finishing with figures of 4/37, the Gujarat Giants (GG) were left with a challenging target to chase.
Despite an improved bowling effort from GG compared to previous games, their chances were hindered by dropped catches, which pushed them onto the back foot. Despite a valiant effort in the chase, GG was restricted to 138/8. Ashleigh Gardener of Australia offered a glimmer of hope for GG with a brisk 40 off 31 balls, including five boundaries and a six. However, her innings was cut short by left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who had her stumped by Taniya Bhatia.
Jonassen, aged 31, played a pivotal role for DC, claiming three crucial wickets with impressive figures of 3/22. Her left-arm spin proved to be a significant asset in the T20 format, further enhancing DC’s dominance. Despite GG’s batters failing to capitalize on opportunities to stage a comeback, left-arm spinner Radha Yadav further dented their hopes by taking 3/20, weaving a web around their batting lineup. Overall, DC’s strong batting performance combined with disciplined bowling proved too formidable for GG to overcome, sealing another victory for the Delhi-based franchise.
Gujarat Giants’ Hopes Dashed as DC’s Bowling Dominance Prevails in WPL Encounter
Opting to bowl first, Gujarat Giants captain Beth Mooney would have anticipated her bowlers putting up a strong performance against Delhi Capitals (DC). Meghna Singh particularly impressed, claiming the crucial wickets of Shafali Verma (13), Alice Capsey (27), and the formidable Meg Lanning. However, DC’s skipper, leading by example, received a lifeline on 30 when spinner Mannat Kashyap’s delivery found an edge but was dropped by Kathryn Bryce. Despite this, Capsey’s brisk 17-ball 27 and Annabel Sutherland’s quickfire 12-ball 20 propelled DC’s innings forward.
However, the narrative shifted as dropped catches plagued the Gujarat Giants’ fielding efforts, putting them in a precarious position.
In reply, GG’s batting lineup faltered. Beth Mooney managed only 14 runs before being dismissed leg before wicket by Jonassen, while the other opener Laura Wolvaardt departed for a duck courtesy of Shikha Pandey’s bowling. Jonassen struck again to claim Phoebe Litchfield’s wicket for 15 runs, and Veda Krishnamurthy’s promising start of 12 runs went in vain as she failed to convert it into a substantial score. Debutant Tarannum Pathan contributed 9 runs before being dismissed by Arundhati Reddy in WPL.
