The Death of Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi was the son of Indira Gandhi, and he assumed the charge of the Congress party after the assassination of her mother, Indira Gandhi, by her two Punjabi security guards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India at 40 years of age when he took over the charge of the Prime Minister’s office in October 1984.

He served as the Prime Minister of India until 1989 when he was succeeded by VP Singh of Janata Dal. But he was later assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election event in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on this date in 1991.
