A horrifying incident has shaken Jharkhand as a 35-year-old Spanish tourist was allegedly gang-raped, and her husband brutally assaulted by seven youths in Dumka district late on Friday night. The incident occurred in the Kurumahat area under the Hansdiha police station and quickly went viral on the internet after the survivor and her husband took to Instagram to share their ordeal in a video message.
The police were alerted around 11pm when the woman stopped a police patrol van in the area and pleaded for help. Upon seeing her injuries and her husband’s condition, the police immediately took her to a hospital, where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
Dumka SP Pitamber Singh Kherwar stated that all the accused have been identified and four have been arrested, who have confessed to the crime. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to apprehend the remaining culprits.
The couple has been kept at a secured location following medico-legal procedures. Their statements are being recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. Authorities have set up a three-member medical board for the medico-legal process.
The incident has sparked outrage, with people questioning the prevailing law-and-order situation in the state. Political figures, including Godda BJP legislator Amit Mandal and MP Nishikant Dubey, have raised the issue in the state assembly, demanding stringent punishment for the perpetrators and criticizing the handling of the case by the police.
There have been calls for a thorough investigation and ensuring the safety of tourists and residents alike. The incident highlights the urgent need for improved law enforcement and measures to prevent such heinous crimes in the future.
