On Monday, Delhi Finance Minister Atishi presented the much-anticipated Delhi Budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, unveiling a slew of initiatives aimed at bolstering various sectors while prioritizing welfare schemes, education, and infrastructure development.
Among the key highlights of the budget was the launch of the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,’ a groundbreaking scheme aimed at empowering women across the capital.
Under the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,’ women above the age of 18 will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, effectively providing financial assistance and promoting independence among women. However, certain categories such as government employees, income taxpayers, and pension beneficiaries will not be eligible for the scheme, as outlined by Minister Atishi during her budget speech.
The budget allocation for education received significant attention, with a staggering Rs 16,396 crore earmarked for the education sector in FY25. This allocation represents approximately 21% of the total budget outlay and underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and resources. Additionally, funds have been allocated for the construction of new schools, maintenance of existing classrooms, and specialized educational programs.
In a bid to address infrastructure needs, the Delhi government allocated Rs 8,423 crore to civic bodies, aiming to bolster developmental works in areas such as education, health, and sanitation. Moreover, a substantial budget of Rs 902 crore has been allocated for the upliftment of unauthorized colonies, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving living conditions and basic amenities in these areas.
The budget also focused on healthcare, with an allocation of Rs 8,685 crore for the health sector, signaling the government’s dedication to providing accessible and quality healthcare services to the residents of Delhi. Furthermore, investments in public transport, including the introduction of e-buses and the expansion of the Delhi Metro network, were highlighted as part of the government’s efforts to enhance mobility and reduce carbon emissions.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s administration reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, with Minister Atishi addressing concerns regarding the budget’s funding sources. She clarified that not a single penny would be received as a share in central taxes, emphasizing the government’s self-reliance and fiscal prudence.
Overall, the Delhi Budget 2024-25 reflects a holistic approach towards inclusive growth and development, with a strong emphasis on welfare measures, education, healthcare, and infrastructure enhancement. The unveiling of the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana’ stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and socio-economic progress.
