Notable Authors Honored at Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023

Telugu novelist T. Patanjali Sastry, Malayalam writer E.V. Ramakrishnan, and Tamil writer Rajasekaran (Devibharathi) are the winners of Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023.

The winners of the esteemed Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023 were announced on December 20. The notable authors awarded are Telugu novelist T. Patanjali Sastry, Malayalam writer E.V. Ramakrishnan, and Tamil writer Rajasekaran (Devibharathi).

Nine poetry volumes, six novels, five collections of short stories, three essay collections, and one literary study were honoured for their exceptional achievements this year by the Sahitya Akademi Awards.

The Sahitya Akademi Executive Board accepted the awards, which were recommended by a prestigious panel and were given out in 24 languages. Books that were first published between January 2017 and December 31, 2021, were among the selection criteria.

The Sahitya Akademi Awards are given out by the Government of India’s Sahitya Akademi and come with a Rs. 50,000 cash prize in addition to a copper plaque. In 1955, the tradition of honouring the contributions of language and literature was founded.

Poetry, short stories, novels, plays, autobiographies, biographies, literary criticism, and epic poetry are the categories in which the Sahitya Akademi Award is given. For his book “The Guide,” R.K. Narayan received the inaugural Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar in 1960. Puraskar in 1960.

Among the distinguished recipients of the Sahitya Akademi Awards were Ramakrishnan for his literary analysis Malayala Novelinte Deshakalangal, Sastry for his Telugu short story collection Rameshwaram Kaakulu Marikonni Kathalu, and Rajasekaran for his book Neervazhi Paduvum.

Sanjeev in the Hindi category for his novel Mujhe Pahachaano, Bengali author Swapnamay Chakrabarti for his novel Jaler Upar Pani, Neelum Saran Gour for the English novel Requim in Raga Janaki, and scholar Lakshmisha Tolpadi for his collection of Kannada essays Mahabharatha Anusandhanada Bharathayatre are among the other recipients of awards.

The following people will receive honours for their poetry collections: Manshoor Banihali (Kashmiri), Ashutosh Parida (Odia), Gaje Singh Rajpurohit (Rajasthani), Arun Ranjan Mishra (Sanskrit), Vijay Verma (Dogri), Vinod Joshi (Gujarati), and Swarnjit Savi (Punjabi).

At the awards presentation ceremony on March 12, 2024, the Sahitya Akademi Award—symbolized by a casket holding an engraved copper plaque, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000—will be given out.

Dedicated to promoting literature in Indian languages, the Sahitya Akademi was founded on March 12, 1954, and functions as an independent organization within the Union Ministry of Culture.
